When starting a POD business, you will have to identify your niche to create your unique designed products. In this article, let’s find out what is a niche market and some examples of niches in the Print on Demand business.

What is a niche?

A niche is a small segment of the market. Normally in niches, competitive advantages are the unique and quality of the products, not the price. In POD business, the best niches you can choose need to have:

High demand enough

Easy to find customers online

Many interested communities: websites, groups, forums…

More specific (demographic, product type, a particular price point, and a certain quality…)

There are many ways to find a good niche. You can set up in two ways – either focusing on a product niche or a subject niche. A product niche can be funny pillowcases or shirts for puppies. With a subject niche, it might be a hobby: country music, yoga  etc. Don’t forget to take advantage of Google Trend tools, Amazon’s Best Selling Products, eBay’s Trending Products, Etsy’s Best Selling Items, Notonthehighstreet, Trendhunter, Trendwatching and Facebook Audience Insight to find your niche.

Some examples of niches:

Hiking:

One of the outdoor activities and it’s bigger than you think. If you’re walking to set up camp, or just hiking the trails to get to a beautiful view, everyone likes to prepare themselves for a future hike. A t-shirt with quotes showing interest in hiking or a 3D legging for hiking is a good product for this niche. With some friend groups or families joining the hiking together, your product can be a good way to show friendship or family love.

Weightlifting:

Dedicated bodybuilders are very open to strength training inspired clothing. Designs about lifting capacity and dedication are particularly popular. This gives you a great opportunity to create some awesome merch.

Vegetarians:

Vegetarianism is not only a food choice, but a lifestyle. Vegetarians are serious about not consuming meat. Some for health benefits, and others by choice. This is a great group who are very passionate and vocal about their lifestyle.

eSports/eGame:

Major League Gaming events have been making huge strides throughout the online community. It’s a group that takes the interest very seriously. In 2018, the global eSports market was valued at nearly 865 million U.S. dollars and is estimated that it will reach 1.79 billion U.S. dollars by 2022. Worth a try!

Golf:

This is a $25 billion industry, heavily populated with the upper-middle class. Add that to the fact that most golf enthusiasts enjoy traveling to different courses and you’ve got a lot of options as far as creativity. With the amount of cash spent on equipment and apparel, it’s no wonder it’s one of the best niches to break into.

There’s really no end to the options you have when selling Print On Demand products, finding the perfect niche is something you’ll have to decide on yourself. Don’t be afraid to try a few different niches that you’re interested in. You have plenty to choose from!
